Information

Hello everyone. My name is “Hiromori“. Because of this name, I often get asked if I am part Japanese, but I am actually a Chinese person from Beijing.

I have lived in Japan for four years and have a graduate degree from Hokkaido University. I started teaching Chinese when I was in Japan, and have worked as a Chinese language teacher at a cram school, a Chinese assistant teacher at a graduate school, and have also worked as a Chinese language-related YouTuber. My specialties are teaching the 301 textbook series (introductory to intermediate level) and the HSK Chinese exam preparation lessons. Some of my students have successfully scored 280 on their HSK exams.

So, why are you interested in studying Chinese? Amongst my own students, I have seen many different reasons for studying Chinese, such as for work, for their own interest, to obtain a certification, or because they had a Chinese partner.

First of all, I would like to thank you for choosing to study Chinese. I also believe that there are many advantages for Japanese speakers when learning Chinese. This is because Japan is the only nation in the world, other than people of Chinese descent that use Chinese characters. In addition, Chinese is spoken not only in continental China, but also in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and many other countries. With its large population and large market, China has attracted a lot of attention from around the world. Being able to speak Chinese will surely help you in your career, when you travel, amongst many other areas.

You probably have a lot of concerns about starting to learn Chinese. Chinese pronunciation is certainly different from Japanese. There are also “standard Chinese” and various “dialects”. Since Beijing is the capital of China, “standard Chinese” is based on Chinese spoken in Beijing. As I am from Beijing and have also attended an announcer training school, I speak with a clear and accurate pronunciation. In my lessons, I often use a recording app so that you can practice pronunciation outside of lesson. This is why I believe even absolute beginner level students can feel comfortable taking lessons with me.

I also think that it is important to understand not only language, but also the cultural aspects. Beijing, as the capital city, is not only famous for its language, but also for its many famous cultures. When you say “Beijing,” what comes to mind first? “Peking Duck”? Or the “Forbidden City”? Perhaps the “Great Wall of China”? In fact, for the locals, these three are not cultures that are often referred to in daily life. Peking duck is not a household dish, and dumplings are more commonly eaten on a daily basis. The National Palace Museum and the Great Wall of China are also full of tourists, so I myself have only been there on occasions like my senior year trip. You often see people practicing Tai-chi in local parks. It is more popular than radio exercises in Japan. Such cultural differences are really interesting, aren’t they? I often talk about Chinese TV-dramas, Chinese singers, and travel plans to China with my students during lesson. It is both refreshing and fascinating to be exposed to different cultures.

Finally, as a fellow language learner, I would like to tell you that learning a language is never easy. However, I believe that is why us teachers exist. I believe that language learning is something that the more time you put in, the more you will get out of it. Let’s have fun while studying together.
