MelanieTogether Tutor Profile

~ Why Can I Write, But Not Speak? ~

In Japan all schools teach the same English grammar, reading, and writing from textbooks. However, the speaking classes are very different. Is the teacher confident in speaking? Does the school have an ALT? Is the school focused on preparing for exams?
These things can change the student's ability to speak.
For example, there is no English speaking for college entrance exams. A school that wants many students to pass the entrance exam will probably not challenge students to speak English. If the students cannot practice their speaking skill, of course it will be much lower than their reading and writing. Many Japanese people have had this experience. If speaking is difficult for you, you're not alone!
日本でたくさんの人は英語を読んで書いているですけど、喋るのは「無理!」それは、人や英語のせいでわありません。テストでスピーキングがいりませんだから、学校で練習チャンスがなかった。私はもう教室で教師でわないですけど、まだこの問題に対して何とかなりましょう!

~ Introducing Ms. Melanie ~

Hello! My name is Melanie (メラニー). I grew up in the USA, but now I am living in Kyoto. I have been living in Japan since January 2019. That's before coronavirus!
I went to university in Texas and studied Biochemistry and English. After I graduated, I got a job in Tokyo! There, I started to learn Japanese by speaking to many people in my daily life.

2019年5月!日本に5ヶ月

I met many nice people, but Tokyo and my job were very busy, so I was a little lonely. After two years I was having a difficult time and moved to Shiga prefecture. I really enjoyed living in Shiga and met many new friends! I always took a walk to see Lake Biwa, because the sunset is very beautiful!

ビワイチ!自転車で琵琶湖一周をしました。

In Shiga, I had to speak Japanese all the time. So, my language skill got better and better. After one year in Shiga, I passed the Japanese Language Profeciency Test (N3) without studying Japanese in a classroom! Because I studied Japanese by conversation, I want to help you study English the same way!

抹茶パフェ大好き♡

In March 2023 I moved to Kyoto! I am researching Medical Science at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine. It is very difficult >.>
But, it is also very interesting! I am enjoying my time living in Japan. Rather than thinking studying is difficult, let's improve our English naturally by enjoying talking about many things together!

  • 中学校から大学まで教える経験があります!
  • 特別支援学級経験もあります。
~ Lesson Style and Goals ~
  • As much as possible, I will only speak English.* You are free to speak to me in Japanese, but I will give you some feedback and challenge you to say it again in English. Your speaking skill can only improve when you actually speak English!
  • Conversation lessons have 3 sections: Warm-up, Challenge, and Review. ** You don't have to think about these sections! It is my job to change the conversation topic and level so that you can practice well. 'Warm-up' uses English that is comfortable for you, 'Challenge' uses new or complicated English, and 'Review' will give you a chance to practice the difficult parts from 'Challenge' again.
  • Free conversation classes are for daily conversation. If you would like to focus on grammar, do homework problems, or prepare for a test/meeting/interview please choose the appropriate class.
  • My goal for myself is that you feel like you're chatting to a friend - not studying!
  • My goal for you is that you can use the English you know to communicate your ideas. For example, if you don't know a word in English you will be able to use other words to make me understand. I believe this is possible for all English levels!
*if we need to talk about something important, for example meeting times or computer problems, I can speak Japanese with you. もし大事な話があれば、パソコン問題や難しいことを説明しなければならない、私は日本語で話します。
** Does not apply to 15 minute classes.

~ FAQ ~

Q: Can I do all English lessons if I have zero English skill?
A: Of course! I have taught many students from the beginning. For example, this student started with zero English skills. We had lessons once a week using mixed Japanese and English. After 6 months, they went to India by themselves! 6 months is very fast! They studied hard outside of lessons, too.

Q: Why do you reccomend 25 minute classes?
A: For most people, I think that 25 minutes or longer is the time needed to get into a conversation "flow", where you can comfortably speak and improve your English.
If you cannot choose, we can talk about your worries and decide together!

Q: What about grammar?
A: Did you study Japanese grammar when you learned to speak? As you talk to native speakers, grammar naturally stays in your head when you listen to the way they use words and phrases. It's a big advantage of studying with a native speaker! This is the way I learned Japanese. Sometimes I make small mistakes, but I am always understood. I could even pass the national test!
Isn't it more comfortable to speak without keeping a list of 'rules' in your mind? Especially in English, the grammar 'rules' change too often. Let's use grammar naturally without thinking ~
