What is that stinking smell?

Sep 14, 2018 | 1 Comments

A rare Indonesian plant that only blooms once a decade is stinking up the Toronto Zoo.

This rare plant is called corpse flower, because it smells like rotting flesh.  It only blooms for 8-36 hours.

The plant relies on carrion beetles and flies for pollination, that's why the smell of the flower isn't as sweet as a normal flower.

48 hours before blooming, the plant grows rapidly, up to 2-3 inches a day, until it reaches a height of 3-4 feet.

Due to the rarity of the flower, many people are visiting the Toronto Zoo these few days to see it.
