I have been a qualified Pilates teacher for years now, but since being in Japan I have taught less than 5 classes in this.
I initially felt that Yoga was far more popular in Japan, and that I wanted to promote and help spread Tai Chi (this is all still true!), but I have since noticed that there are lots of Pilates students in the big cities here and it seems that many people desire good quality Pilates training!
In a country with a large ageing population - practices like Pilates, Tai Chi and Yoga are not only sensible, but could be in fact essential to living a healthy life through to old age.
For those who don't know about Pilates - the basic premise of this system is to strengthen the core muscles and improve posture, stability of the hips and spine and more.
In Pilates we never isolate any limb or muscle, without generating the power from the 'core' muscles. This is due to how in real, everyday life - all of our strength is generated from our centre.
Think about a tree - if the trunk of the tree is weak, then it doesn't matter how strong the branches are. In a typhoon, the entire tree will fall down or break.
Likewise it is the same with our bodies.
Think of our torso (core) as the trunk of the tree, and our legs and arms as the branches and roots. If our centre is weak, then it is irrelevant how strong the extremities are!
After all - we are only as strong as our weakest link!
