Garden Journal #4

Ben Proctor

Until a few weeks ago, I never had a fixed routine for clearing my garden. I would let the garden get into bad shape, and then would make a big effort to clean it up, only for it to get gradually overrun by weeds once again. I knew something had to change, and since I found it hard to get up the motivation to tackle the problem, I decided to make it the first thing I did after waking up.

I wake up at 4:45am most mornings. I want to be in the garden by 5am so I wake up fifteen minutes beforehand so I can get changed and get everything ready (mosquito coils etc.). Because my garden is pretty big, I decided to divide it into 7 sections (or 'zones', as I call them). One for every day.

Zone 1 starts on Saturday, and Zone 7 ends on Friday. I just focus on one zone a day, and spend about 30/40 minutes weeding, raking and general cleaning. After it's done I go inside and have breakfast. It feels good looking out the window in the morning, and seeing the small progress from that day. I made a point to make the routine as easy as possible, so it would be easy to keep.

And that's it! Now it's rainy season the weeds are growing fast, but with the system I have, they aren't overrunning the garden like before.

Do you have any morning routines? If so let me know with a message or a comment.

Thanks for reading and see you again next week.
