The strangest food I’ve ever eaten

Weekly Topic: What is the strangest food you’ve ever eaten?

Aug 10, 2021

I’m not very adventurous when it comes to food, so I don’t eat strange things often, but I have tried a few weird ones, including...

Unusual animals:

  • I grew up on a farm in the countryside and at one point shot a porcupine. Although it’s a very unusual animal to eat, we decided to clean and cook it to try it. It was a bit strange, and I probably wouldn’t do it again!
  • The first time I visited Japan, I went out for dinner with a small group and someone ordered jellyfish. I guess it was fried, but I’m not really sure. It didn’t have much flavour, so it was just an interesting novelty.

Weird combinations:

  • I once ate at a Japanese restaurant in Canada that was experimenting with some unusual combinations. I saw an eel (unagi) and banana roll on the menu, and even though it was really weird, I decided to try it. I regretted it and won’t make that mistake again!
  • When I was very young, I used to put different kinds of food together like a science experiment. One of my weirdest creations was a yogurt and carrot sandwich. It wasn’t great, but I was able to finish it somehow. What can I say - kids do weird things!

Food that’s not for humans:

  • Finally, I tried eating dry cat and dog food when I was a child because I was curious about what my pets were eating. It was really dry and a bit salty, but not terrible. I didn’t go back for seconds, though, and I was never tempted to try the wet stuff!
