Hello! だけではない:いろんな挨拶「こんにちは」

Nov 11, 2021

Hello!

そして使い方によってはHow are you?に似ている意味にもなります。
ぜひ次のレッスンで違うHelloを使ってみませんか?

There are a lot of different ways to greet people in English! But be careful, some are formal and some are only to be used with your friends. Some of these are also similar to ‘how are you?’ depending on how it’s used.

Hey / Hi - informal but can be used in the workplace

Good morning/afternoon/evening - formal

or, you can take away the ‘good’ and say ‘morning/afternoon/evening’ - informal

Greetings - formal

Howdy - informal (US)

What’s up? - informal

What’s going on? - informal

G’day (mate) - (AUS/NZ)

How do you do? - very formal

How’s it going? - informal

What’s good? - informal

What’s new? - informal

What’s happening? - informal

What’s crackin’? - informal

What (are) you saying? - informal (UK)
Hiya - informal (UK)

Alright? - informal (UK)

Alright, mate? - informal (UK)

I live in the UK so I often use ‘Hiya’ and ‘Alright?’ for informal settings like when I see my friends.

There’s also a greeting similar to 久しぶり which is ‘long time no see’ . This has definitely been used more frequently after Coronavirus lockdowns!

Why not try using a new ‘hello’ in you next English lesson?
