Expressing your Opinion and Holding a Discussion

Do you struggle with prolonged discussions?

Do you find it hard to express your opinion?

What are the best phrases to use, that will make it easier for you to express your view?

What if you disagree with someone? What should you say?

In a discussion, it is commonplace to find yourself being asked about how you feel about something. To participate effectively, using the right choice of vocabulary and extending your answers can help promote a two-way conversation, enabling you to elicit the views of your listeners as well as pose questions in turn to them. Let’s go through a few of these situations and associated phrases or question tags:-



How do you ask someone for their opinion?

Here are some common phrases you might use:
·       What do you think about….?
·       How about you?
·       What do you feel about her response?
·       What’s your view?


How do you express your opinion?

  • I feel that…
  • I think …..
  • In my view,..
  • I agree too and I also feel that….
  • I imagine that….


How do you disagree with someone?

  • I certainly don’t think that….
  • I disagree because….
  • I understand how you feel about this but I have to disagree….

 Expressing one’s opinion and holding an effective discussion will be expected in most situations you encounter, including language proficiency assessments such as EIKEN and IELTS.
