MY TOPIC THIS WEEK: Six Effective Ways to Strengthen Your Willpower

Weekly Topic: Name one dish you would like to have in winter.

Dec 15, 2022

Everyone knows what it feels like to have the choice of eating or leaving that extra slice of cake, and finding it hard to muster up the motivation to do the right thing. This is where willpower comes in. Willpower is the ability to resist temptation and stick to your goals. It's an important trait to have if you want to succeed.

To grow and strengthen your willpower, try these six ideas.

IDEAS FROM ME

Set Realistic Goals for Yourself
An important thing you can do to strengthen your willpower is to set realistic goals for yourself. When you set too high a goal, it's easy to get discouraged and give up. On the other hand, if you set a goal that's too low, you might not challenge yourself enough and fail to reach your potential. Therefore, it's crucial to find a happy medium.

Make a Plan

Once you've set your goals, it's essential to make a plan for how you're going to achieve them. This allows you to stay on track and resist temptation. Make sure your plan is specific and realistic. For example, if you plan to lose weight, you might include going to the gym three times a week and eating healthy meals.

Take It One Step at a Time
Trying to accomplish too much will cause overwhelm and is a recipe for disaster. When you're trying to improve your willpower, it's important to take things one step at a time. Try to only focus on one goal until you get the hang of it, before adding more.

Get Rid of Distractions

One of the biggest enemies of willpower is distractions. So when trying to focus on something, it's important to get rid of anything that might distract you. Turn off your phone, close the door to your office, and free your environment of anything else that might distract your attention from what you're trying to do.

Find a Role Model

Finding someone already successful at achieving their goals can be helpful. This person can be a source of inspiration and motivation when you're struggling to stay on track. Also, look for someone who has achieved something similar to what you're trying to do. For example, if you're trying to lose weight, find someone who's successfully lost weight and kept it off.

Reward Yourself

Last but not least, it's important to reward yourself when you accomplish something. This will help you stay motivated and continue working towards your goals.

These are six effective ways to strengthen your willpower. If you desire success in life – and let’s be honest, we all do – developing this critical trait is essential. By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to developing stronger willpower.

FROM THE PROFESSIONALS

“We all have the power of thought - so what are you lacking? If you have willpower, then you can change anything.” — Dalai Lama

“Willpower is like a muscle: The more you train it. The stronger it gets.” — Anonymous

“The most important thing in life is to stop saying 'I wish' and start saying 'I will.' Consider nothing impossible, then treat possibilities as probabilities.” ― Charles Dickens

HOMEWORK

Recall a recent incident or situation that tested your willpower. How did you manage to handle it? What were some of the lessons you learned from it?
