Wild Boar Meat

Laura P

Have you ever eaten a wild boar?

Before I moved to Japan, I had never tried this kind of meat, but it's a local specialty in Shimane Prefecture, my current home.

In Shimane, wild boar can be eaten in a variety of ways such as in a hotpot or curry. Recently, I tried wild boar meat in stew (in the picture above). It was made by a local company called Kanuka. They have a food truck that often sells wild boar dishes at festivals. In short, their stew was delicious!

I think wild boar meat is similar to pork, but the flavor is a little different. I can't describe the flavor very well because the meat in my stew took on the flavor of other spices. I want to try wild boar meat again soon so I can better understand it.

If you ever visit Shimane Prefecture, I highly recommend trying wild boar!
