Applying TENSES when describing charts and diagrams

Suja

In IELTS Academic Writing Task 1, you may be required to describe data presented in charts or graphs or even asked to describe a diagram.

Pay careful attention to your tenses when describing a chart or graphic.

Generally, we apply the simple present tense to describe facts in the present. For example: This diagram shows the process of recycling paper.
Also, if no dates are presented on your chart, you can apply the present tense.

However, if your facts are presented in the past, use the simple past tense. For example if the years or dates presented are in the past you could for instance say, "The number of smokers increased from 2006 to 2008..."

Using the right tenses is important as this will be assessed under the assessment criteria of "Grammar"

Now, what happens if your dates are presented in the past and in the future?
