Collectables

Zach McLaughlin

Do you have a collection? I’ve had many in my life! When I was young I collected everything from rocks to stamps to coins to cards and even bottle caps! I’m still finding and throwing away (or selling) old collections of things. During the pandemic, I got rid of most of my card collections and said that I wouldn’t collect cards anymore, but this year I got sucked back in!

Have you ever heard of Tim Hortons? It’s a very well-known cafe chain in Canada that was founded by Tim Horton, a hockey player for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The company maintains a strong connection to hockey (Canada’s national winter sport) and often runs hockey-themed promotions. When the NHL (National Hockey League) season starts in October, Tim Hortons launches a brand new set of hockey cards. Each pack contains 3 cards and can be purchased for $1 if you buy a drink or $2 without one. There are always several rare and valuable cards, as well as winner cards that you can redeem for a rare item like a signed card or jersey (or just a free drink!). I tried collecting those cards twice, but both times I gave up, sold my collection, and swore never to do it again. And yet…

This year, Tim Hortons has a new promotion with the hockey legends cards and, you guessed it, I started collecting them! At first, I said I was just trying to get my favourite player’s card, then other people (including my own father) started supporting my addiction and picking up packs of cards for me with their orders. Then I had to buy the album and try to collect the whole set! Even though I know that collections can become expensive and take up a lot of space, I guess I always need to collect something. I just have that itch that needs to be scratched!
