Talking about insects in English: Part 2

Zach McLaughlin

Things insects do

While some insects fly or hop/jump, most insects crawl.

Ex. Ack! A caterpillar was crawling up my arm!

Insects are always hungry! They like to eat flowers and vegetables in our gardens as well as other substances like paper, wood, or cloth. Synonyms of eat, such as munch and chew (on / through) may be used when speaking about insects eating things.

Ex. It looks like some bugs have been munching on our tomatoes.

Ex. Over the years, termites chewed right through the wooden walls.

Some insects make specific sounds. For example, bees buzz, crickets chirp, and cicadas may be said to call. In general, though, we can simply say that an insect is making noise.

Native English speakers often use the words bite (bit/bitten) and sting (stung/stung) interchangeably when it comes to insects, even though they are completely different! Even after being stung by a wasp, a person may say “A wasp bit me!” This is a bit lazy, but it’s common.

While many people dislike insects, they are actually quite interesting and their bodies are incredibly strong and amazing! Insects are also essential to human life because they maintain natural ecosystems and help us to grow food (by pollinating our plants). Personally, I like insects very much, but I might be biased because I used to work with them before I became a teacher! If you find an interesting insect in your home or garden, let me know what it is!

Until next time, sleep tight and don’t let the bedbugs bite!
