Best Time for a Walk

T Mun Yee

I would go for a walk any time in the day. However, I think doing this right after a heavy shower is a cause for celebration.

I live in a tropical country, Malaysia. The average temperature is 31oC - 33oC almost all year round. If that sounds hot, high humidity is also part of our weather. In Kuala Lumpur, for example, the relative humidity is about 66 percent. Humidity is the amount of water vapour in the air. It is the cause of the stuffy, sticky feeling of just stepping out of a hot shower. That means even if the temperature is 33oC, it feels more like 38oC.

There is a brief respite to this. Along with the sunshine come the tropical downpours and winds. When it is all over, it is time for a walk in the park.

There is freshness in the air. A gentle breeze is stirring. I hop over puddles and head for the canopy cover of the trees where drops of rain fall on my head and trickle down the back of neck. There are very few people about but the birds seem to know that the day is done with the rain. I hear them chirping brightly before I see them. I stick my palm out to catch a drop of water that is about to drip off a leaf. A yellow butterfly flits past my face.

From a distance, I hear children laughing in the playground. It looks like everyone is coming out to play soon.
