Idioms that use weather vocabulary

Thirzah

It is often difficult to understand Idioms and to use them correctly. Idioms are a great way to communicate and can help you to sound more native.

Sometimes I see a connection between the weather and my mood or emotional state. Many idioms using weather vocabulary also reflect our mood, emotions or level of focus.

Here are some common ones for you to discover.
Can you guess which words go in which gaps?

11= storm
12= nine
13= clouds
14= shine

Don't be surprised if you find this difficult as my idiom lessons are for Upper- Intermediate and Advanced students only. Here you will see examples of my high-quality teaching materials.

Maybe working with pictures and your imagination is easier for you.
Try this next activity

In picture A the man is very happy so we would say he's on cloud 9.
Picture B shows a bored student with his head in the clouds i.e. not focusing on his studies.
Picture C shows a hard-working mathematician getting very stressed. Maybe he has been working too hard for too long and now his head is an information fog. He can't think clearly anymore.
Picture D is of storm clouds that indicate a storm is coming. The moments before the storm break are calm but not always appreciated because we are concerned about the coming storm.

Now try to create some imaginative sentences about the pictures using the idioms.

Next, try to guess the meaning of these idioms.

How did you do? Here are the answers.
