My beloved Dr. Seuss (Readings for ESL Learners)

Weekly Topic: Favourite book to read this season

One of the best ways to practice English is by reading. Reading as an ESL Learner can be  quite challenging but a really effective way to practice reading in English, at any level, is to read children’s books! You don’t have to have children to read children’s books.

Here it comes my favorite children's author, Dr. Seuss.
Theodor Seuss Geise was an American children's author and cartoonist. He is known for writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss.

My encounter with a Dr. Seuss' book was in 2014 when I first moved to Seattle as a live-in nanny.  Dr. Seuss’ books are adapted to learning English because they were written to teach children to read English, by using a limited and simple vocabulary.

Dr. Seuss wrote most of his books in a poetic meter. Rhyming forces you to pronounce correctly, speak at the correct pace, and repeat vocabulary. Exactly what you need to improve your spoken English!

“I don’t like this trick, sir. My tongue isn’t quick quick or slick, sir. I get all those ticks and clocks, sir, mixed up with chicks and tocks, sir. I can’t do it, Mr. Fox, sir. ”

I read kids books aloud daily during my work hours for years, and It helped me develop a cleaner and more accurate English pronunciation.
Among my favorites are; “Fox in Socks”, “Green Eggs and Ham”, and “Hop on Pop”. I read those titles gazilions of times.

“I AM SAM. I AM SAM. SAM I AM.

THAT SAM-I-AM! THAT SAM-I-AM! I DO NOT LIKE THAT SAM-I-AM!

DO YOU LIKE GREEN EGGS AND HAM?”
