Like a Fish to Water

Weekly Topic: International Day of Happiness! One thing that makes you happy...

Mar 18, 2024

One English phrase we often use to describe happiness is to say 'she took to her bike like a fish to water'. Or in reply to the question 'How is he enjoying his piano lessons going?' we could say 'like a fish to water'. It means he or she feels perfect in the (new) situation, just like a fish placed in water would feel.

The situation when I feel 'like a fish to water' is when I am in the element of water. Whether I am swimming, floating, or only dangling my feet in it, I feel joy and happiness when I am in natural water sources, such as lakes, rivers or seas. Of course it helps that I live in the alpine lake region of Europe, where the water in natural lakes is clear and unpolluted (= not dirty).

Being submerged (= underneath and surrounded by something completely) in water in nature makes me feel like a part of something bigger than myself. It might even remind me of being in my mother's tummy before I was born, but that idea is a far stretch (= unlikely). In any case, water surrounding me gives me endless joy and comfort!
