Our Universe on Netflix: A Journey for ESL Learners

StephanieRiann

Have you ever looked at the stars and wondered what they have to do with youDid you know we are all made of stardust ?

Netflix’s documentary series Our Universe shows us exactly that — how every life on Earth is connected to the stars. Narrated by Morgan Freeman, this six-episode series combines the science of space with the beauty of nature.

I watched it recently, and I was absolutely fascinated. Each episode feels like both a science lesson and a life lesson. It’s also a wonderful way for English learners to hear clear narration, learn new vocabulary, and think deeply about our world.

I’d like to invite you to watch this series one episode at a time. After each episode, let’s come together and chat about it in English — share your ideas, ask questions, and connect what you learn to your own life.

What You’ll See in Each Episode

  1. Chasing Starlight – Discover how the Sun’s energy gives life to animals like the cheetah.

  2. The Cosmic Clock – Explore the meaning of time, from the birth of stars to the lives of chimpanzees.

  3. Turning Seasons – See how Earth’s tilt creates seasons, and how brown bears survive the winter.

  4. Elemental – Learn how the elements of life (like oxygen and carbon) were made in stars and supernovas.

  5. Water World – Follow elephants as they search for water, and discover where Earth’s water came from.

  6. Force of Attraction – Understand gravity, the invisible force holding the universe together, through the life of penguins.

Why ESL Students Will Love It

  • Clear Narration: Morgan Freeman’s voice is slow, powerful, and easy to understand.

  • New Vocabulary: You’ll hear useful English words about science, nature, and life.

  • Visual Learning: The mix of cosmic CGI and animal footage makes it easy to follow even if some words are new.

  • Big Ideas: You’ll see how your own life connects to the universe — a topic that can lead to great discussions in class.

My Challenge for You

Watch Our Universe on Netflix. Try one episode a week. While you watch, think about these questions:

  • What surprised you the most?

  • Did you learn a new English word or phrase?

  • How do you feel about the connection between the stars and your own life?

Then, come and talk with me! We’ll use English to explore not just language, but also the mysteries of our world.

?? Are you ready to join me in this journey through space, Earth, and life? Let’s watch, learn, and connect — because truly, we are all made of stardust.
