Boston's Art in Bloom Show

Ann K

One of the most anticipated shows at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts is Art in Bloom. The show is special for many reasons.  It is a celebration of spring and the beauty of visual and floral art.  It is also the oldest show of its kind in the United States.  Unlike most shows, it is of short duration - just a weekend, but a weekend enjoyed to the fullest by everyone.

Each spring, garden clubs from across Massachusetts create unique floral displays inspired by the museum's many works of art. They are assigned a painting, sculpture, or other work of art and tasked with creating a floral arrangement which compliments and enhances it. Often the shapes, colors, and forms echo the original work of art.

In my case, I visited the exhibit with friends and family.  We were impressed by the creativity of the floral artists as they strove to translate the essence of each work of art into flowers.  In the photo shown, a view of the Boston Common in winter is perfectly echoed by the floral arrangement featuring white and orange flowers representing snow and the sunset.

One reason people enjoy Art in Bloom is the very fact that it is of limited duration.  They stroll through the galleries, enjoy the floral work, and dine in the Art in Bloom Cafe (which exists only during the show). They know they can do this only one weekend a year.  That is why Art in Bloom is special.
