I Didn't Love School—But I Never Stopped Being a Student

What I Enjoyed About Being a Student

If I'm being completely honest, I don't remember loving school.

I wasn't one of those students who looked forward to every lesson or thought school was the best time of my life. Looking back, I think I appreciated education much more as an adult than I ever did as a child.

For me, becoming a student didn't end when I left school—it had only just begun.

Throughout my corporate career, I completed numerous courses and training programmes. Each one taught me something valuable, but one course stands out above all the others: my Paralegal qualification in Property Law and Conveyancing.

There was something about it that fascinated me. It allowed me to step just outside the world of law and peek into a profession that has remained my secret passion for many years. Even today, whenever I deal with property matters in my work, I still find myself genuinely interested in the legal side of things. Learning about it never felt like a chore—it felt like discovering something I was meant to understand.

That course taught me something important: the best learning happens when curiosity leads the way.

It's funny how life works.

I never imagined that I would eventually become a teacher. It wasn't a career I planned from the beginning. Instead, it happened gradually, one opportunity at a time, until I realised that helping others learn had become one of the most rewarding parts of my life.

Now, when I design lessons, I don't simply think about what needs to be taught. I think about the student sitting on the other side of the screen. I ask myself, "How can I make this lesson interesting? How can I make them remember this?"

Whether we're laughing over a speaking activity, solving a language puzzle, or building confidence one sentence at a time, I hope my students leave each lesson feeling that learning can actually be enjoyable.

Perhaps that's what I enjoy most about having been a student myself.

Every course I completed, every trainer I met, and every subject that sparked my curiosity helped shape the teacher I am today. They showed me that education isn't just about passing exams; it's about discovering interests, building confidence, and opening doors you didn't even know existed.

And maybe that's my biggest hope for my own students.

One day, years from now, someone might ask them, "Who was a teacher you'll never forget?"

I would love to think that, for even one student, my name comes to mind—not because I taught perfect grammar or corrected every mistake, but because I made learning feel worthwhile.

If that happens, I think I'll be able to say that I truly enjoyed being a student after all.
