A Person Who Has Inspired Me: Marie Curie

Weekly Topic: A person who has inspired me

Ms Cathy

Marie Curie, Polish- French Scientist

Marie Curie was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to win a Nobel prize twice,  and the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields: physics and chemistry.

Her work on radioactivity led to X- ray units, which were used in hospitals.

In her early life, she was not rich in material terms, but she was always rich in intelligence and determination.

In 1898, Curie and her husband published a joint paper announcing the existence of an element they named 'polonium', in honour of her native Poland. Later in the same year, the Curies announced the existence of a second element, which they named 'radium'. They invented the word 'radioactivity'.

Marie Curie was very honourable. She received scholarships when she was poor, but she repaid them. She did not patent her work on radioactivity, so that the scientific community could work on it freely. When she won awards, she insisted that the money and gifts that she received should be donated to the scientific institutions that she was affiliated with, instead of her.

Rumour has it that Albert Einstein said she was the only person not to be corrupted by fame.
