Today, I'm sharing five useful expressions to help you feel more comfortable and confident with English.
1. “That makes sense.”
Use this when you understand somebody’s explanation or accept their opinion.
Example:
A: “I like to study in the morning because I have more energy.”
B: “Oh! That makes sense!”
2. “How about you?”
This is a simple way to keep a conversation going and show interest in the other person.
Example:
A: “I love watching movies in my free time. How about you?”
B: “I enjoy reading and listening to music.”
3. “I'm not sure, but…”
Use this when you want to say something that isn't definitely true.
Say: "I'm not sure, but maybe we should leave now."
Don't say: "We should leave now."
4. “Actually…”
This is useful when you want to clarify something, introduce a surprising fact, or gently correct a misunderstanding.
Example:
A: “You don't like coffee, do you?”
B: “Actually, I love coffee!”
5. “It depends.”
Use this when your answer changes depending on the situation.
Example:
A: “Do you prefer staying home or going out?”
B: “It depends. Sometimes I enjoy a quiet evening at home, but other times I love going out with friends.”
Now it's your turn!
1. What's something people might be surprised to learn about you? Try starting with “Actually…”
2. Do you prefer studying in the morning or at night? Explain your answer.
3. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Try using “How about you?” in your answer.
Remember, Practice makes perfect, and if you wish to be able to speak English more regularly in your daily life, then you should do it in a casual and friendly environment.
