Learning a foreign language or practicing a musical instrument、and so on、 can be fun and challenging, can't it?
My mother was a teacher of traditional Japanese dance(Nihon Buyoh), and she once shared with me something her own teacher had told her when she was an apprentice.
"First, dance exactly the way your teacher has taught you. Don't try to add your own interpretation or make changes on your own. You can express your own originality only after you have mastered the dance exactly as your teacher taught it. That was the lesson my mother passed on to me.
I'm an amateur guitar player myself. When I practice a piece, I always start by following the sheet music faithfully, especially when it comes to tempo and rhythm. I don't add my own arrangements until I've mastered the piece as written.
I still follow my mother's advice to this day. ^^/
