世界三大奇祭と言われているタイプーサム。二日目の今日は朝早くから、カバティと呼ばれる大きな神輿を担いてヒンズー教信者が参拝するのを見に行ってきました。ヒンズー教の神、ムルガンへの忠誠心、信仰心を表すために、この見ているだけで痛そうな修行をします。この参拝の様子が世界三大奇祭と呼ばれる所以です。（痛そうな写真を見れない方はここまでにしておいて下さい！）

On the second day of Thaipusam, devotees go through a physical endurance of being skewered and pierced on the back and front of their bodies as an act of penance. (If you can't bear to look at the photos of piercing etc, you better stop here.) 

信者はカバティーを大きな釣り針のような物で刺してつなげたり、顔の頬に矢を突き刺す、または金属のミルクポットを体に針でぶら下げたりします。

The kavadi (Burden Dance) is the ceremonial sacrifice and offering performed by devotees during the worship of Murugan. As you see, mortification of the flesh by piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers is very common. 

家族のサポートの中で、痛みに耐える男性。膨大な数のミルクポットが体中に付けられていくのを見ました。もちろん、座ることも水さえ飲むこともできないですよね。周りに励まされながら耐えている姿に感動、尊敬の念を持ちました。

I was particularly fascinated by this man who was surrounded by his family and supporters. He endured the entire process of getting the milk pots pierced onto his upper body, including his both arms. Of course he can't sit or drink. I was very touched, and can't help but feel respect for him. 

こちらはちょっと中華系の信者かな～と思いました。友人のグループで準備をしている所です。女性の方もいました。

They seemed to have Chinese background and to be a group of friends. I also saw two women in the group! 

皆、キリっといい顔をしています。決意の程が見えます。They all look very handsome and determined. 

不思議なことに体に針を刺しているのに血がでないんですよね。Surprisingly, there was no blood in this ceremony! 

このような儀式的なことが行われている広場から、植物園近くのArulmigu Balathandayuthapani寺院までは4キロ弱の参拝です。上の写真からも分かる通り、大きな釣り針にロープをつなげた物を台車につなげて引いています。道路は歩行者天国になり、スピーカーからはインドの音楽がガンガン流れてきます。それに合わせてダンスをする参拝者がいました。道端には無料で提供する食べ物や飲み物の屋台がずっと並んでいて、とても賑やかでした。

The devotees have to walk about 4km from this square to Arulmigu Balathadayuthapani Temple.  Thunderous loud music, singing, dancing and the beating of drums of devotional songs are the norm during this festival. Upon reaching the temple, devotees will fulfil their vows, offer thanksgiving prayers and do penance as required.
