(13) MAGIC! - Rude

Aug 6, 2014 | 4 Comments

To make today's post fun to read, I have snuck (or should I say sneaked) a hidden gag somewhere in the text below. I made it really hard to spot. So, please look hard for it as you read.

OK, let me start today with some clarification: In the previous post, I said that "you and I" sounds like "Ewan, die!" That might have given you the wrong impression that *I* said, "Ewan, die!" and you might have thought I was very rude. I'm not such a rude person. The banner on my prof pic says "Old," but not "Rude"... yet. All I did was point out a sound change that occurs when you say "you and I." The "d" sound at the end of "and" combines with the vowel of "I" and makes the "die" sound. So, I'm just a messenger who delivered that to you. Please don't blame the messenger. It's not me but One Direction (if they have not changed their name yet) that says "Ewan, Die!" repeatedly in the song. They are the ones to blame.

Anyway, contrary to my polite personality, the song I picked for today's post is "Rude" by Canadian reggae band "MAGIC!" This is their debut single, but the band's lead singer, Nasri, isn't new in the music business. He's been working with another guy for years as a songwriting/production duo named "The Messengers." Their works include Justin Bieber's "All Around The World" and "Never Say Never," among many others.

So, next time you research a song, check who its writers and producers are. You might find the name "The Messengers" some time. But, they're just the messengers, so please don't blame them. Blame 1D (or 1WSB, depending on their current name) instead.

Anyway, back to today's song. Lyrically, this song is about a man (presumably Nasri) asking his girlfriend's father for permission to marry his daughter. Nasri gets turned down. Not once, but three times. Each time, he pleads with the father, "Why you gotta be so rude? / Don't you know I'm human, too?" I think Nasri is as rude as the father. The father's answer is no, and he never changes his mind in the song.

In the video, however, it looks like the father, without saying anything,  relents or quits caring in the end and disappears back into the house with his wife. That, or he just goes inside to make a phone call to a local pest control company. I don't know. What do you think?

Also, in the video, you see Nasri kneel down and propose to the girl, giving her the engagement ring. That's not in the lyrics.

Anyway, this song, as well as the video, is very interesting to me personally because I myself might pop the question in the not-so-far future. So, this is very helpful for my own planning. Here are some do's and don'ts I have put together by studying the lyrics and the video.

Do's: None.

Don'ts:

Don't use a car. I can't drive, and I'm not sure I can ride a bike, either, because I haven't ridden one in ages. So, I'd better arrive at her house on a tricycle, with training wheels to be on the safe side.

Don't wave your body like seaweed. That's contagious.

Don't ask the father. Ask the mother instead. Mothers are usually more understanding.

Don't accidentally ask the mother to marry you.

Don't "run away to another galaxy." This is what he says in the lyrics, implying the possibility of eloping as the last resort. But, that's not a good idea. Other galaxies are too far away. The Andromeda Galaxy, for example, is about 2.5 million light-years away from the earth. Can you calculate how many years it will take if you fly from here to that galaxy at the speed of light? I can't even imagine.

Considering all of these, and also considering that every marriage proposal should be unique, I've come up with the following plans so far:

Ride a NYC-bound Long Island Rail Road train with her, and propose to her in the train car, as I play a Justin Timberlake song on my smartphone speaker.
(*These plans are subject to change.)

Unfortunately, I'm low on funds. So, I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me out and chip in for this noble cause. Here's how: Make a regular lesson request. Say in the message, "No actual lesson needed. Just take the money. Good luck, Yoshinori!" The amount of money you want to donate can be chosen from all the lessons I offer (except for the zero-point lesson). There's no limit on how many times one person can make a donation. Part of the money will automatically be donated to Cafetalk, too. Now, I know it would be terribly rude to ask all of you for financial help, so I wouldn't do that. Instead, only those of you who couldn't find the hidden gag are asked to make your contributions as a penalty. Thank you in advance!

前回のブログで、「you and I」が「Ewan, die!」【ユーアン・ダイ】(ユーアン、死ね!)

彼らの作品例には、Justin Bieber の「All Around The World」「Never Say Never」など多数あります。

毎回、彼はその父親に「Why you gotta be so rude? / Don't you know I'm human, too?」(どうしてあなたはそんなに失礼な態度をとらなきゃならないんですか?/ぼくも人間だっていうことがわかってないんですか?)
