(15) Echosmith - Cool Kids

Lately, I have been fascinated by the way owls turn their heads around. That smooth head rotation without any eye or body movement is such a "hoot"! In my personal opinion, that makes the owl one of the coolest birds. Here's a fun fact: Owls can only move their heads right and left, not up and down.[citation needed] That is like they only shake their heads and never nod. Thus, their nickname "habitual naysayers."[citation needed]

Anyway, I'm not here today to talk about "cool birds." What I want to talk about today is the song "Cool Kids" by American indie pop band Echosmith. They are siblings, composed of one sister and three brothers. This song has been their first major hit. Their previous songs include "Walk This Way," "Angel," "Livin' on the Edge," and "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."

This song is about uncool kids wishing to be like the cool kids. The first verse of the lyrics lists a couple of differences between an uncool kid (= she) and the cool kids (= they). One of which is as follows: "they all got the same heartbeat, but hers is falling behind." I guess this means all the cool kids' hearts are beating in sync somehow, as if controlled artificially by a pacemaker or something, while her heart rate is slowing down, going "boom clap, booom claap, boooom claaap, beeeeeeeeeep." That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, claiming a correlation between the heartbeat and the coolness.

Anyway, as I look back on my own school days, there indeed were always "the cool kids." The cool kids were typically either the athletic type or the guitar-strumming type or the pacemaker-wearing type or the head-rotating type. I didn't belong to any of those cool groups. Though you may find this hard to imagine, I was the kind of kid who would make puns and drop them at a random classmate nearby―puns that I thought were funny but actually weren't.

Anyway, this song just talks about the longing to be a cool kid, and falls short of giving any guidance or advice to those who have that feeling. So, I have no idea whether this song wants to say, "Fake yourself and fit in with the cool kids" or "Don't give in to peer pressure and be yourself." For this lack of substance, I thought this song was not cool but lukewarm until I kinda figured out this song's real message, which has a much deeper meaning. Here's my interpretation of this song:

I think "Cool" refers to body temperatures below 95°F (35°C), and that "Cool Kids" means kids suffering from hypothermia. Hypothermia is usually associated with winter or cold places, but actually, hypothermia can occur at any time of the year, including summer. The cause can be something as simple as wearing wet clothes or swimming for a long period of time. The two girls you see at 2:40 in the video seem to be "Cool Kids." Fortunately, they seem to have been saved, and you see one of them smiling at 3:05. So, I think this is a hypothermia awareness and prevention song.

Sticking with the temperature theme, let me talk a little bit about the "Hot" teacher banner on Cafetalk. Cafetalk is a very open website. Pretty much everything, except for the registered users' personal account pages, is open to the public. Anyone with Internet access can see this blog, for example. My concern is that if a total stranger stumbled upon the "Search for Teachers" page displayed in a language he/she doesn't understand and saw "Hot" on some profile pictures, it could be misleading since the page looks so much like an online dating site. The word "hot" has several different meanings, and which sense of "hot" can be very hard to be determined without context. So, my suggestion to the Cafetalk staff is change "Hot" to "Sexy" to clear up the ambiguity. And my suggestion to Echosmith's lead vocalist Sydney is, "Please cut your hair!"

OK, folks, that's about it! Thank you all for reading! Any comments are welcome as always. And, yes, I'm jealous of "Hot" teachers, but I'm not sexy or spicy or radioactive or currently in high demand or running a high fever or emitting a Wi-Fi signal for public use, so I'll never be able to earn the "Hot" banner. That's why I made one by myself and put it on my profile photo. I made it invisible to the human eye so that the Cafetalk staff wouldn't find out. I used a color that is outside the visible spectrum, yet still visible to the owl's eye with its excellent night vision. If you don't believe me, show my picture to an owl and ask in owl-speak, "Can you see 'Hot'?" and watch for its physical response.

彼らのこれまでの曲には「Walk This Way」「Angel」「Livin' on the Edge」「I Don't Want to Miss a Thing」などがあります。
