Let's Do Some Dictation!
Practice your listening skills with a short exercise. Then, you'll do dictation & I'll check your pronunciation!

Want to improve your English listening comprehension? Dictation is a great way to gather data on how well you can understand!
Why do dictation? Sometimes, it's hard to determine how well our listening skills are. Often, it's quite easy to over- or under-estimate our skills because we can gather the gist of a sentence without knowing every word. Dictation helps give clear, concise information on what you do & do not understand!
How does dictation work? If you've taken English lessons at school, you may have done this exercise. The teacher will recite a short text (around 50 words) to the class. The student's goal is to write down the text with as much accuracy as possible. Spelling is important, while punctuation is less important, because it doesn't usually hinder comprehension.
While you can type, it often makes it too easy. Why? Many people have a built-in spellcheck on their internet browser, notes app, or writing program. Spelling can be important for determining the correct homonym or other similarly pronounced words. For this reason, I recommend hand writing. Plus, it's good to have a physical reminder of what you can do!
After reading the text 2-3 times, we do a quick check! I will share what I was reading on screen & we can discuss any spelling errors, new vocabulary words, or phrases that are unknown to you.
If we have time, it's your turn! I will give you a new text to read, and I will try to write down what I heard. Why is this important? Not only is it fun to make the teacher do the exercises, it also helps me point out gaps in pronunciation that actually impacts communication. Not every mistake can make your speech difficult to understand, so this exercise really helps determine what to focus on first!
