Getting to know each other!

Description

I will provide 4 English conversational tips along with a dialogue to help you better understand the conversation. In this example I've provided below you are meeting up with a new friend at a cafe. This friend has a problem and you want to help them.

 1.)
Engage in Meaningful Conversations: Ask about how they're doing and listen actively and show genuine curiosity in what the other person is saying.
Example Number 1:
You: Hi! Nice to see you again!
Friend: Hey, it's good to see you!
You: How have you been?
Friend: Well not to good.
You: Why?
Friend: I'm getting over a headache.
You: Oh I'm so sorry to hear that

2.) Ask Open-ended Questions:

Pose questions that can't be answered with a simple yes or no, encouraging them to share more.
Example Number 2:
You: What is bothering you? Is it your throat?
Friend: My throat is perfectly fine. However, I have a headache.
You: How long has your head been bothering you?
Friend: For 2 hours.
You: What have you done to feel better?
Friend: I've been drinking a lot of water.

3.) Share About Yourself:

Opening up about your own experiences and thoughts in this case about having a headache. It can possibly create a sense of connection and encourage them to do the same.
Example Number 3:
You: Sometimes I get bad headaches.
Friend: Really?
You: Yes.
Friend: What do you do to feel better?
You: Sometimes when I have a headache I eat ice cream.
Friend: Does it help?
You: Yes! I think you should try it.
Friend: Sure. Why not? I'll give it a try.

4.) Be Patient:

Building confidence in your speaking abilities takes time. So be patient with yourself and let the relationship evolve naturally.
Example Number 4:
You: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Mine is vanilla.
Friend: I don't know?
You: Do you like Vanilla?
Friend: No.
You: How about strawberry?
Friend: I've never tried strawberry ice cream before.
You: Maybe you'll like it.
Friend: I think I'll give it a try.
You: Great! I'll buy you some strawberry ice cream.
Friend: Thank you so much! I hope it will help my head feel better.
You: You're welcome, and I hope so too.

Remember, getting to know someone is a gradual process that requires both parties to be open, attentive, and respectful. Must people are understanding and patient with new language learners.
