Understanding the news

An in-depth look at news stories, where they come from, what they mean and how they effect your life

Description

The news is around us all the time.

Sometimes it is good to get a perspective on the news from other countries.

The news is also a useful way of practicing your listening and speaking skills.

By looking at the broadcast news in English, you will hear both:
  • Professional speakers
  • Interviews with regular speakers
You will also be better able to understand how English speaking cultures create priorities in news coverage:
  • what is important
  • what is newsworthy
  • what is necessary for you to know
These ideas may just surprise you, but will certainly help you to get closer to English speaking people and so improve your own communication with them.

This is a focused look at news. In general, we will:
  • Choose a short news clip, either print or spoken (radio or video)
  • Identify the important aspects of the story (who, what, where, why)
  • Talk about why the story is important to report
  • Analyse who the story is directed to
Additional notes and homework are available for students who want to continue their analysis of the class after the session.
