Description
Lesson Title: Using Small Talk/Networking at Business Events
Class: 1:1
Duration: 35 minutes
Content: How to chat with colleagues/clients at business functions
Target Student: Anyone who works in an international setting
Language Focus: Colloquial phrases, idioms, general small talk, expressions
This lesson comprises three main parts:
First, the student will be presented with various occasions where they may need to interact with business associates from different parts of the world. This will be followed by a questionnaire about the types of topics the student would like to improve on speaking about — e.g. sport, cultural differences, climate change, politics etc.
Next, the teacher will provide the student with some example dialogues covering a range of topics. These conversations will be the kind heard at international business events — small talk and general chit-chat. The teacher will introduce colloquial terms and idioms commonly used in such dialogues/interactions by native English speakers or near native speakers.
Finally, the student will have the opportunity to practise several role plays with the teacher — where they will discuss several topics, including those already presented and themes the student feels comfortable with.
Note: This lesson is fun, engaging and very useful for people who often struggle to know what to say when speaking with businesspeople at international events.
