Role-play for simulated, real world situations based on the students' needs/goals.
Description
This lesson can be tailored to each individual student depending on what they want to achieve or practice. First I have written a short breakdown, underneath that there is a more detailed description.
- 5 minutes - Describe and explain the role-play scenario
- 5 minutes - Perform the scenario
- 5 minutes - Feedback and advice
- 10 minutes - Perform the scenario using the feedback and advice, and introducing new or unexpected elements for realistic practice
- 5 minutes - Final feedback
- OPTIONAL homework
After the student describes what they would like to achieve (i.e a scenario to focus on, particular grammar, vocabulary, idioms, phrases, etc.) I will prepare a role-play scenario to simulate this situation between myself and the student. These scenarios could range anywhere from something simple as a job interview or a tourist asking for help, to something more complicated and dynamic such as answering difficult criticisms in a business environment to having lost luggage at the airport.
The first 5 minutes of the lesson will consist of describing and setting the scenario, the following 5 minutes is spent acting out the scenario. After this section, I will take 5 minutes to provide feedback and answer any questions the student has - this time is also used for me to help the student with what to focus on (be it improving their grammar or pronunciation, the flow of their language or how to sound more natural).
The next 10 minutes is used to practice the scenario again, this time putting into effect the feedback the student received in the middle step. I will also use this section to improvise some new events in the scenario and unexpected twists, to help them thinking on the spot.
The final 5 minutes is again used for feedback, including more constructive criticism and praise.
This class has an optional homework of practicing and learning the given feedback as well as the student desigining their own roleplay scenario for the next lesson (if they wish to).
