Using the correct grammar to retell events

Description

Topic: In this classes will explore narrative tenses used in a business contect.
Aim:  to learn the correct application of the part continuous, past perfect, past simple and present perfect.
Tasks: Review/introduce the tenses

What tense is usually used for?
1. Setting the scene and providing background information. 
Past continuous =  was/ were  -
ing

2. Events which happen before the story begins.
Past perfect = Had + past participle

3.
Events in the story.
Past Simple  = infinitive +ed

4. Saying what the present results of the story are. 
Present Perfect= Have/has + past participle


Provide examples:
We can use different tenses to narrate a story:

Past simple:  The company firedher.
Past continuous: Everything wasgoingreally well. (was/were+ present participle)
Past perfect: She had lied on her CV. (had+ past participle)
Present Perfect: Since then, I’ve advised everyone to be honest. (have + past participle)


Listen to an audio and put the events in the oder they happened
Listen to the audio again and make note of the tense used for each event

Student is to then to tell a story about any of the following ideas using the tenses discussed (can be assigned as homework):

1) A significant news event you remember well

2) An ethical problem you know about

3) A memorable event in your life (good or bad)

4) An unusual or memorable experience while you were travelling abroad

5) Your first or last day in a job or organisation
