🧩 Lesson Outline

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Objective: Activate prior knowledge about routines and frequency.

Activity:

  • Ask students:

    • “How often do you drink coffee?”

    • “How often do you watch TV?”

    • “How often do you go to bed late?”

  • Elicit answers like “every day,” “sometimes,” “never,” etc.

  • Write their answers on the board and highlight the frequency words.

Transition:
Say: “These words are called Adverbs of Frequency — today we’ll learn how to use them correctly.”


2. Presentation (10 minutes)

Objective: Introduce and explain adverbs of frequency and their placement.

Explanation:
Write on the board:

AdverbMeaningExampleAlways 100% I always eat breakfast. Usually 90% She usually walks to work. Often 70% They often watch movies. Sometimes 50% We sometimes eat out. Rarely / Seldom 20% He rarely drinks soda. Never 0% I never smoke.

Rules:
✅ Adverbs of frequency usually come before the main verb:
→ I usually get up at 7 a.m.

✅ After the verb “to be”:
→ I am always late.

✅ With modal verbs, they come after the modal:
→ You can always ask for help.

Quick Check:
Teacher says sentences and students decide if they are correct or incorrect.
E.g. “I go always to work by bus.” (❌) → “I always go to work by bus.” (✅)


3. Guided Practice (10 minutes)

Objective: Practice sentence construction with adverbs of frequency.

Activity 1 – Fill-in Exercise
Students fill in blanks with suitable adverbs of frequency:

  1. I _______ watch TV in the evening.

  2. She _______ eats vegetables.

  3. We are _______ late for class.

  4. They _______ go to the gym.

  5. My parents _______ travel abroad.

Activity 2 – Sentence Reordering
Reorder the words:

  1. is / always / she / punctual → She is always punctual.

  2. goes / often / he / swimming → He often goes swimming.

Check answers as a class and explain.


4. Communicative Practice (15 minutes)

Objective: Use adverbs of frequency in real-life speaking.

Activity 1 – Pair Work: “How Often?” Interview
Students ask and answer:

  • How often do you cook at home?

  • How often do you exercise?

  • How often are you late for school/work?

  • How often do you use your phone before bed?

Extension:
Students write 3–4 sentences summarizing their partner’s answers:
→ Maria usually exercises in the morning. She rarely eats junk food.

Activity 2 – Class Survey (optional if time allows)
Ask students to stand up and find classmates who:

  • always eat breakfast

  • often watch Netflix

  • sometimes skip lunch

  • never drink coffee

Then report to class:
→ Three students never drink coffee.


5. Review & Wrap-Up (10 minutes)

Objective: Reinforce learning and assess understanding.

Quick Quiz:
Say the sentence and ask students to fill in with the correct adverb:

  1. I _______ brush my teeth before bed. (always)

  2. She _______ eats fast food. (rarely)

  3. They are _______ on time. (usually)

  4. We _______ go to the beach in winter. (never)

Mini Speaking Round:
Ask:

  • What do you always do in the morning?

  • What do you sometimes forget to do?

  • What do you never do on weekends?

End by summarizing:

“Adverbs of frequency help us describe how often we do things. Remember: before main verbs, after be, and after modal verbs!”


🧠 Homework / Extra Practice (Optional)

  • Write a short paragraph (6–8 sentences) about your daily routine using at least five adverbs of frequency.
    Example:

    I usually wake up at 6:30. I always drink coffee. I sometimes go jogging. I rarely watch TV at night. I never skip breakfast.
