Description
This reading lesson is designed for beginner and primary-aged children and provides a calm, supportive, and text-based learning environment that helps develop confidence, fluency, and comprehension skills.
The lesson begins by introducing and exploring the key vocabulary from the text. New words are discussed in context to ensure children understand their meanings and know how and when to use them in everyday communication. Visual prompts, examples, questioning, and discussion are used to deepen understanding and encourage active participation.
The main teaching approach follows the gradual release model of “I read, we read, you read.”
First, the teacher reads the text aloud, modelling accurate pronunciation, fluency, pacing, intonation, and expression. This provides children with a clear example of fluent reading and helps them hear how meaning is conveyed through voice and expression.
Next, the teacher and students read the text together, allowing children to practise pronunciation, rhythm, and expression with support and guidance. Repetition and encouragement help build confidence and reading stamina.
Children then independently read the text themselves while the teacher provides individual support where needed. Emphasis is placed on reading fluently, accurately, and with expression rather than simply decoding words.
The lesson progresses gradually through the text, moving page by page to ensure children fully understand the content before continuing.
At the end of the lesson, children answer comprehension questions through discussion, oral responses, or written activities. Questions focus on understanding vocabulary, recalling information, identifying key ideas, and making simple inferences from the text.
The overall aim of the lesson is to develop fluent, confident readers who can read with understanding, expression, and enjoyment while steadily building vocabulary and comprehension skills.
