Topic: ‘IF I WON THE LOTTERY’ - Travel, shopping, bucket list, dreams
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to…
• Use the second conditional to talk about wishes and imaginary situations (e.g., If I had 7 wishes, I would…)
• Recognise and use ‘Bucket List’ vocabulary related to travel, experiences, purchases, and helping others
• Express personal ideas and dreams in both written and spoken form
• Share and compare wishes, practicing conversation skills
• Develop creativity and confidence in speaking about hypothetical situations
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Quick Discussion:
• “What would you do if you had a million dollars?”
• Encourage simple answers: “If I won the lottery I would buy a house / a sports car / a yacht and travel the world”
2. Vocabulary Introduction (7 minutes)
Introduce and practice key vocabulary:
Places to travel: African safari, Paris, New York, Rio De Janeiro
Things to buy: sports car, mansion, clothes
Bucket list ideas: learn to surf, skydive, climb Mount Everest, Travel to space
• Activity: Matching Game
- Give students a list of words/pictures.
- Students match words to categories: Travel / Buy / Bucket List
3. Grammar Focus – Second Conditional (5 minutes)
- Explain the structure:
If + past simple, … would + verb.
If I won the lottery, I would travel to Japan.
If I had a million dollars, I would buy a mansion. - Show both forms:
Beginners: If I won, I would buy…
Intermediate: (add variety): If I were rich, I’d invest… / donate…
Quick Drill: Teacher says a beginning, students finish:
If I had a million dollars, I would…
If I traveled to Italy, I would…
4. Fun Activity (8 minutes)
Lottery Dreams Game
- Students work in pairs.
- Each student gets $1,000,000 “imaginary money.”
- They must “spend” it on travel, shopping, and bucket list items.
- Example: “I would spend $200,000 on a house. I would travel to Thailand for $5,000.”
For beginners: Use pictures & simple words.
For intermediates: Add explanations and reasons.
5. Fun Wrap-Up (5 minutes)
- End with a fun “vote”:
- Most interesting plan? Traveled to furthest part of continent vs Mars? Bought the craziest thing? Most generous wish ie. donation?
Outcome:
Students practice vocabulary (travel, shopping, bucket list), reinforce the second conditional, and have fun imagining dreams.
