Description

1. Understand the test ( テストを理解します )

Each test focuses on different areas, and assesses language ability in different ways. It’s important to understand the structure, format, and question types you’ll see on the test you take, so that you can prepare effectively.

2. Start listening early ( 早く聴く )
Developing an ear for a second language can be extremely challenging. Depending on the test you choose, you may need to understand and answer questions based on recorded or spoken English, so you should start practicing as soon as possible. Listening to audiobooks in English can be a great way to develop an ear for the language. Many audiobook apps even allow you to slow playback to 50% or 75% speed, making it easier to understand individual words. Music videos and movies with subtitles are also great listening options.

3. Don’t neglect the verbal ( 言葉を無視しないでください )
Speaking can be the hardest skill to master, especially if you don’t have other language-learners to practice with. Your biggest roadblock here is confidence – people who aren’t afraid to sound funny at first are more likely to get in the practice they need. Whether it is talking to your dog, locating a study group, or practicing with an English-speaking friend via Skype, the more you are able to work on your English-speaking skills, the better off you will be.

4. Consider using flashcards ( フラッシュカードの使用を検討してください )
Memorization should not be your primary strategy when studying for an English proficiency exam – it’s just not an efficient or effective way to learn a language. But there are elements like specific vocabulary words or grammar rules that can be useful to have memorized. Many companies sell pre-made flashcards for the TOEFL, the IELTS, and the PTE, but it can be just as effective to make your own. You can locate free flashcard-creation resources online, or go old-school and make your own out of index cards.

5. Get an official test-prep book ( 公式のテスト準備本を入手する )
Strengthening your general English skills is very important, but it can’t replace studying for an actual test. Most of the test makers have resources available online, and you can also find test prep books at many local libraries or bookstores. Give yourself plenty of time to get familiar with the concepts and question types presented on the test, and don’t forget to leave time for a couple of full-length practice tests.

6. Find a tutor or a test-prep class ( チューターまたはテスト準備クラスを探す )
Learning a language is a dynamic process; you can learn on your own, but if possible it’s much more effective to practice the language with other people. Even a few hours with a trained English tutor or an informal study group can make a big difference in your test score. You’ll gain confidence in your skills, and have partners you can call on for listening and speaking practice.

7. Work on your timing ( あなたのタイミングに取り組みます )
Preparing for an English proficiency exam doesn’t just mean learning the rules of the language; it also requires being prepared to answer questions in the allotted time.

Some tests have more stringent timing than others, so make sure you understand the requirements of the test you are taking. The best way to feel confident about your timing on any exam is lots and lots of practice – both with the concepts tested and with full-length practice tests.

8. Plan ahead for writing success  ( 成功を書くための事前計画 )
The writing portion of the test may feel almost like an afterthought, but in reality, written communication will be incredibly important to your success in business school. The most effective writing is writing that clearly conveys a specific idea.

Give yourself plenty of practice with effective communication by outlining and brainstorming all your writing – even if it’s only a paragraph or so. The time you spend in pre-writing will be amply repaid when you are able to quickly create a solid first draft that conveys all your arguments.
