English speaking lesson 1:
This lesson is designed for lower intermediate English learners who are not native speakers. The focus is on developing speaking confidence through natural conversation about free time, interests and hobbies. Students will practice using simple, connected sentences in a supportive and relaxed learning environment.
Lesson Structure:
- Warm-Up & Review
- Friendly check-in: “How are you today?”
- Quick review question: “What do you do? (work or study)”
- Transition question: “What do you do in your free time?”
- 2. Key Language & Vocabulary relax, hang out, watch, play, listen to...
- Get the student to start the sentence with - “In my free time, I …”
- Or - “I usually … on weekends.”
Introduce useful verbs and phrases such as:
- Model short example answers and have the student repeat and personalise based on interests and hobbies
- Guided Speaking Practice
- Teacher asks open but supported questions: “What do you do in your free time?”
- “What do you usually do on weekends?”
- Encourage 2–3 sentence answers
- Provide gentle corrections and expand student responses naturally
By the end of the lesson, the student should be able to: (tick each that you can do)
☐ Talk about their free time using simple, complete sentences
☐ Use key phrases such as “In my free time, I…” and “I usually…”
☐ Answer basic questions about hobbies and weekend activities
☐ Speak with increased confidence and clearer pronunciation
