Business/Materials

1. Pictures of means of transport on the white-board – car, bus, train, train and airplane

2. A quote or quotation “Travel and see”

3. Parts of essay to be written on the white-board

Lesson Objectives

1. Students will be able to identify means of transport.

2. Students will be able to write an Introduction to an essay on the benefits of traveling

Warm-up and Objective Discussion

Using questions, draw the attention of the student to what her/she can see on the white-board.

Discuss the quote “Travel and see” Let the student mention the means of transport by which he/she arrived in school today.

Explain to the student that movement from one place to another is referred to as travel or traveling. Let the student give other meanings of travel such as making a trip, making a journey.

Inform the student that today he/she will learn about the benefits of traveling.

Explain to the student that at the end of the lesson, he/she will write an introduction to an essay on the benefits of traveling.

 Instruct and Model

1. Draw the attention of the student to some pictures of means of transport on the white-board and ask him/her to pronounce the items –car, bus, train, boat, ferry, and airplane. Let him/her know the pronunciation and meaning of the words.

2. Ask the student to say whether he/she likes to travel and the likely reasons why he/she is interested in travelling.

3. Let the student mention other benefits travellers derive from travelling e.g. to know other geographical places, to learn about other cultures, for business purposes, to learn new technologies and to make new friends.

4. Ask the student to mention some of the challenges travelers face e.g. accidents, natural disasters, delays and lack of means of transport.

5. Discuss the main modes of transport – LAND, SEA, RIVERS, LAKES & AIR.

6. Lead the student to identify some means of transport that fall under these modes of transport.

 LAND – bus, car, train, motorbike, bicycle

SEA, RIVERS, LAKES – ships & boats.

AIR –airplane or aeroplanes

7. Discuss with the student some factors that can influence the choice of a means of transport at a particular time – comfort, reliability, safety, cost and speed.

8. Write the 3 main parts of an essay (Introduction, Body, Conclusion) on the white-board and use them to revise the student’s knowledge of writing an essay.

9. Read out the introduction to a model essay about the teacher's travel to Kumasi in Ghana by bus.

Guided Practice

1. Read the introduction again and point out the ‘hook ‘and the ‘thesis statement’

2. Let the student know that there are different ways of introducing an essay – a short story, a quotation, a historical information and a thoughtful question

 Independent Practice

1. Let the student try to compose an introduction to an essay on the topic “The benefits of travelling”.

2. Let the student say it orally as practice. The teacher points out any errors.

Assessment:

Let the student write out an introduction s on the topic “The benefits of travelling”.
