the world´s favorite superfood

Description

The students reads a text about the supposed health benefits of chocolate. They practice reading for detail and study how we can use ¨one¨ and ¨ones¨ to avoid repeating nouns. The student then discusses other superfoods and foods they enjoy as guilty pleasures.

1) Warm-up
Close your eyes and think about the last chocolate you ate:
-> Was it a bonbon, a chocolate bar/a truffle/ice cream?
-> What color was it? (white/brown/dark)
-> Did it have milk or was it dark?
-> How dark was it?
-> Was it crispy?
-> Did you smell it?
-> Did it smell like vanilla?
-> Did it contain something else?

2) What do you think a superfood is? (a superfood is a type of food which is very good for you and has many health benefits)
     Read the first paragraph of the text and check your answer.

3) Now read the whole text.
-> Why is chocolate a superfood? (Because there are many health benefits of eating it regularly)
-> Which five benefits are mentioned? (The five benefits mentioned are: 1. It has lots of minerals which help fight disease. 2. It has chemicals which lower your blood pressure. 3. It helps keep your brain healthy. 4. It makes you feel better because it releases a chemical in the brain, which meakes your heart beat more quickly. 5. It makes you smarter.)

4) Presentation on reading for detail:
When asnwering multiple-choice questions you often have to look for detailed information in a text:
- First, read the text quickly. Then, read the questions and identify the key words.
- Scan the text and find the part that contains the information you need. Read that part in detail.
- If a word from the answer options appears in the text, it doesn´t mean that option is the correct answer. Read the sentence carefully to make sure the meaning of the opinion is the same as in the text.

5)Based on the presentation, the student answer multipple-choice questions.

6) Back to presentation: the students now learns about a text builder - avoid repeating a noun from earlier in the sentence or in a previous sentence by substituting the word with ¨one¨ for singular and ¨ones¨ for plural.
e.g.: Foods that have received this label have been unexciting ones like spinach, garlic, or salmon.

7) Based on this text builder, the student underlines eight examples of ¨one¨ and ¨ones¨ in the text.
-> Which nouns are they substituting?

8) Summarize:
Discuss the questions:
-> Is there any food that is a ¨ guilty pleasure¨ for you? (check understanding of  ¨guilty pleasure¨ = something you eat and you enjoy but you know you shouldn´t really eat.)
-> Have you heard of any other superfoods? Do you eat them?
-> Do you believe the reports about the health benefits of superfoods?
