Lesson Objective

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Use key phrases to order food in a restaurant.
  • Respond to a waiter’s questions politely and confidently.
  • Improve pronunciation and fluency in restaurant-related conversations.
  • Expand their vocabulary with common food and dining terms.

1. Warm-Up (5 minutes) – Engaging Introduction

Activity: Icebreaker Question

  • "What is your favorite food?" (Students describe in 1-2 sentences.)
  • Visual Aid: Flashcards with pictures of popular foods (pizza, sushi, pasta, etc.)
  • Mini Discussion: "Have you ever ordered food in English? How was the experience?"

Teaching Tip: Use pictures to prompt discussion and introduce new vocabulary naturally.

2. Vocabulary & Key Phrases (5 minutes) – Essential Expressions

Key Phrases for Ordering Food:

  • "I’d like a burger, please."
  • "Can I have a glass of water?"
  • "What do you recommend?"
  • "I’ll have the chicken sandwich."
  • "Could I get the bill, please?"

Visuals: Slide or PDF with phrases and pronunciation guide.
Listening Practice: Play a short audio clip of a customer ordering food.

Repetition Exercise: Students repeat each phrase with correct intonation.

Teaching Tip: Encourage students to practice pronunciation using mirroring (repeating after the teacher).

3. Role-Play (10 minutes) – Interactive Practice

Activity: Restaurant Role-Play
Pair Work: Teacher acts as a waiter, student plays the customer. Then switch roles.

  1. The tutor reads a simple restaurant menu (PDF or slide).
  2. The student places an order using key phrases.
  3. The tutor asks follow-up questions (e.g., "Would you like fries with that?") to encourage natural responses.
  4. The tutor provides feedback on fluency and pronunciation.

Teaching Tip: Use props or digital images of a menu to make the role-play realistic.

4. Fun Game (3 minutes) – Challenge Time

Activity: “Guess the Dish”

  • Show a picture of a meal. Students must describe it in full sentences (e.g., "This is spaghetti. It has tomato sauce and cheese.").
  • For more challenge, students must use ordering phrases to "order" that dish.

Teaching Tip: Reward correct answers with positive reinforcement.

5. Wrap-Up & Review (2 minutes) – Recap & Feedback

  • Review key phrases.
  • Ask: "What was the most useful phrase you learned today?"
  • Assign a challenge: "Next time you eat out, try ordering in English."

Teaching Tip: Encourage students to practice in real life and share their experiences next lesson.
