Patient Scenarios in Medicine for OET and Real Life Encounters
Role-plays and Scenarios in Medicine
Description
*Kindly check your internet connection for stable Skype communication. Thank you.
This is a course specifically for medical doctors who either intend to take the Occupational English Test or simply wish to improve their English speaking skills when communicating with foreign patients.
Role-plays are based on real workplace tasks and encounters. You will learn expressions which are more appropriate in conversations (i.e. layman's terms, idioms, colloquialisms, etc. as opposed to medical jargon). We shall also practice simplifying technical terms, explaining the causes of diseases, advising the simulated patient, providing instructions, dealing with difficult individuals, addressing concerns and fears, etc.
The typical class flow involves:
A warm-up/ice-breaker (Any topic of your choice, small talk, questions and clarifications you may come across in your practice)
Simulated Exchange/s (normally 2-3 scenarios but you may choose your pace)
a Q&A / Winding Down - a related mini-discussion
Relevant journal articles and cases may also be reviewed for discussion. You may propose topics that pique your interest.
In the trial session, we'll tackle the first scenario in the text book. You will receive the e-task card via Skype.
