Writing Short Posts and Effective Headlines

Learn how to write short but effective posts. This will help you not just to write better emails or social media posts. It will also be useful for writing headlines on presentations or crafting the "elevator pitch" in your CV or job interview

레슨 상세 내용

Great writing does not need to involve long passages of text. One of the saddest stories I ever wrote was only 4 words long. I am a wine lover, so my short but sad story was "I forgot the corkscrew!"

Nowadays people's attention span is very limited. If you don't grab their attention right away they will delete your email, skip to the next Instgram post or change channels without listening to your advertisment. In a presentation or a speech, people switch off quickly unless your chart headlines and content are engaging and easy to read/understand.

This lesson follows the framework as follows:

What?
So what?
Now what?

I will use examples to show you how to put this logic into practice. It's easy to write a "What?" sentence. For example "20% of people in my country drive electric vehicles". To make this more interesting you have to go to the next step "So what?". Is that high or low compared to other countries? What car brands are they driving? Which car brands are most successful? Is it good or bad that the level is 20%? There are many ways to answer the question "So what?".

The really tough part is answering the question "Now what?". Given this information what should you, the manufacturers or maybe even the government do next? Should they offer discounts or promotions on EV's? Should the government offer tax rebates on driving an EV?

The class proceeds in 5 steps.

1. A brief introduction to the What, So what and Now what framework
2. The teacher will take the student through two examples using a Power Point chart and an Instagram post, showing the "before" and "after" versions
4. Each example will be followed by a  discussion of why the "after" version is better. The teacher will correct any pronunciation issues during the discussion and ask the student how they might improve the examples even further
5. Homework - the student practices using the framework with charts they create for presentations, pictures they post on Instagram or Facebook, emails they write or even CV's they submit

The benefits of this class are as follows:

1. It is a structured approach where the student is given real examples of how to put the framework into practice
2. The student can learn how to make content they create more engaging and written in English
3. The lesson can be repeated but this time with the teacher working with the student to help improve content created by the student. For example you could craft a short "elevator pitch" about yourself following these rules. Share it with a friend and check with them whether they find it engaging or not and what they would change. Practice makes perfect. So it is worth repeating this lesson a few times with different examples. For follow up lessons, ideally the student will send the teacher the content in advance of the lesson.
