In this lesson, you will learn how to describe a home, explain where people and objects are, and talk about actions that are happening now.
We will learn vocabulary for the main parts of a house, including:
- a cozinha — the kitchen;
- o quarto — the bedroom;
- o banheiro — the bathroom;
- a sala de estar — the living room;
- a sala de jantar — the dining room;
- o escritório — the home office;
- a garagem — the garage;
- a lavanderia — the laundry room.
You will also practise useful expressions for describing position and location:
- perto de — near;
- do lado de — next to;
- em cima de — on top of;
- debaixo de — under;
- na frente de — in front of;
- atrás de — behind;
- dentro de — inside;
- entre — between;
- à direita de — to the right of;
- à esquerda de — to the left of.
We will practise sentences such as:
- A cozinha fica ao lado da sala.
- O celular está em cima da mesa.
- As roupas estão dentro do armário.
- A Espanha fica entre Portugal e a França.
- Onde estão as suas chaves?
- Cadê a minha carteira?
The lesson also introduces the present continuous, used to describe actions that are happening now. The structure is formed with estar + gerund:
- Eu estou trabalhando.
- Ela está falando ao telefone.
- Nós estamos aprendendo português.
- Eles estão conversando na praça.
The material contrasts habitual actions in the present with activities happening at the moment and includes an illustrated scene for describing what different people are doing.
You will also practise adjectives and colors to describe people, clothing, rooms and objects. We will review how adjectives agree with nouns in gender and number:
- uma casa bonita
- dois quartos pequenos
- uma camiseta preta
- sapatos brancos
- flores lindas
The activities include common descriptive adjectives, opposites and colors such as bonito/feio, caro/barato, limpo/sujo, grande/pequeno, preto, branco, vermelho, verde and azul.
During the lesson, we may:
- identify the rooms of a house from their furniture and objects;
- describe where objects are in your home;
- use a map to explain the position of countries and places;
- describe people by their appearance and position;
- talk about what people are doing in an image;
- practise colors and adjective agreement;
- review numbers, possessives and the verbs ser, estar, ter and ficar.
The lesson includes images, maps, guided exercises and personalised speaking practice. The activities will be adapted to your pace and interests.
By the end of the lesson, you will be able to describe a simple home, locate people and objects, ask where something is, describe basic physical characteristics and say what someone is doing at the moment.
