We will survey the medieval to Early Modern period when human bodies were believed to offer us the ultimate cure. This is a course in which both historical and philosophical justifications for such acts are investigated.

Description

We will read books on medicinal cannibalism and how the bodies are used to cure human illnesses. We will read Paracelsusian texts which give us a philosophical justification, and we will also read works by Sir Kenelm Digby, von Helmont and others who endorsed such views in light of experimental science. We will also read some secondary sources and think about the moral implications as well as medical effectiveness of such treatment.
