Speaking Lesson
Description
News Lesson
Duration of Lesson: 40 minutes
Type of Lesson: Speaking
Level of Students: C1/C2 adults
Nationality: mostly Japanese students, some students from neighbouring countries
Aim:
- To help students express their own opinions on the news and current events that matter most to them, by allowing them to practice speaking with a native speaker
Objectives:
- To teach students the correct meaning, form and pronunciation of media-related words, by discussing news articles in line with the interests of my students
- To improve my students' fluency by discussing their own news interests within the context of an interview and/or informal exchange of opinions on the news
Possible Challenges:
- News articles often use technical terms that most people would not be able to understand or discuss e.g., medical or business terms
- Students may not be able to decide on which of their interests they want to read about
- Spending too much time on the reading exercise will leave less time for students to produce language
Warmer
Have you watched the news, recently? What do you know about China's weakened economy? Is there a new strain of coronavirus? What do you like about the news?
News Article: read and discuss
I will choose a news article based on the student's interests. We will read the first paragraph of the article and share our opinions on it.
Correct the students' grammar and introduce new and useful vocabulary, phrases and expressions.
Interview (about media preferences)
- Which news networks do you use?
- Why did you choose this network?
- How much do you know about the news? How do people make the news?
- Do you remember any interesting news stories? What was different about them?
- Do you like doing research? What kind of lifestyle do journalists have? Do you like their lifestyle?
If there is time at the end, students can ask all of the same questions (from the interview exercise).
Give your students verbal feedback and send a report on the lesson. Ask for feedback on your teaching. Say goodbye to the student.
