Description
In this lesson, you will learn how to communicate in a restaurant, café or snack bar in Brazil.
We will practise useful expressions for:
- saying that you are hungry or thirsty;
- choosing and ordering food and drinks;
- asking questions about a menu;
- speaking to a waiter;
- asking for the bill;
- talking about what you can do;
- saying what you are going to eat, drink or order.
You will practise sentences such as:
- Estou com fome e com sede.
- Vou tomar um café.
- Quero pedir uma sobremesa.
- Você pode trazer a conta, por favor?
- O que você vai comer?
- Podemos sentar naquela mesa?
The lesson includes dialogues set in a restaurant and a snack bar. We will use them to practise ordering a meal, expressing preferences and responding naturally in common situations.
We will review the verbs poder and ir, including the immediate future with ir + infinitive:
- Eu posso pedir agora.
- Nós podemos almoçar juntos.
- Eu vou comer frango.
- Ela vai tomar café.
- Eles vão pedir a sobremesa.
You will also practise important question words, including:
- o que — what;
- quem — who;
- onde — where;
- quando — when;
- como — how;
- por que — why;
- quanto — how much or how many.
Another important part of the lesson is learning how Portuguese articles combine with the prepositions em and de:
- em + o = no
- em + a = na
- em + os = nos
- em + as = nas
- de + o = do
- de + a = da
- de + os = dos
- de + as = das
We will practise examples such as:
- O livro está no armário.
- As chaves estão nas gavetas.
- Os livros dos professores estão na sala.
- A chave da porta está na mesa.
- As bicicletas dos meninos estão no jardim.
The lesson also includes a short reading about a traditional Brazilian lunch. You will learn food and drink vocabulary and organise a simple menu with an appetiser, main course, beverage and dessert.
During the lesson, we may:
- read and act out a restaurant dialogue;
- create a personalised Brazilian menu;
- practise ordering food and drinks;
- ask and answer comprehension questions;
- complete sentences with no, na, nos, nas, do, da, dos and das;
- review singular and plural forms;
- perform a short restaurant role-play.
The activities will be adapted to your pace. You do not need to memorise every contraction immediately. We will practise them in complete sentences and realistic situations.
By the end of the lesson, you will be able to order a simple meal, ask basic questions in a restaurant, talk about what you can or are going to do, and use common Portuguese articles and contractions with greater confidence.
