CONTROLLED ACTIVITY/DRILL

Student practises pronunciation of verbs then makes example sentences from selected verbs. Student gives past simple of verbs.

Teacher asks students if they recognize this famous story, famous children's story, a very old story.

Teacher must be able to improvise/give clues in this lesson because sometimes students will take a long time to work out what the story is and sometimes it is almost instantaneous.

If student does not know the story, show a second verb list. Student and teacher alternately read out the verbs, practise changing to simple past and checking for meaning where necessary.

run ahead
arrive
knock
ask
answer
say
go in
eat up
put on
lie down
wait
arrive

If student does not know the story, show a third verb list. Student and teacher alternately read out the verbs, practise changing to simple past and checking for meaning where necessary.

knock
say
ask, answer (x 3)
jump out
eat up
arrive
shoot/kill
cut open
jump out
fill
throw
live

The majority of students, even with lower level English, guess the story by this point. But if necessary, teacher can now name the story: Little Red Riding Hood. If the story is unknown to the student, refer to:  Akazukin 赤ずきん

Elicit extra vocab with questions. eg Who are the people in the story? The little girl and her mother, the grandmother, the wolf, the hunter
Where do the little girl and her mother live? In a cottage, near a forest.

SEMI-CONTROLLED ACTIVITY

Using the verbs in the lists, teacher and student take turns to tell the story. Begin with the phrase 'Once upon a time.'

Before eliciting the story for 'ask, answer (x 3)'  teacher shows drawings of eyes, ears and teeth (of the wolf). If teaching a group or pair of students, two of the students could do a short role play of the girl speaking to the wolf.

Continue and finish eliciting the story from the verbs.

Elicit 'They all lived happily ever after.'

FREE ACTIVITY

Student chooses any folk/fairy tale and writes a list of verbs for other student(s) or teacher to identify the story.

For advanced students: Ask student(s) what the story means.
