Learn the basics of Python from a friendly Computational Linguist!

Description

This lesson is for those who never coded before. I'll help you learn to think like a programmer through a series of beginner-friendly exercises and projects. Everyone can learn how to code!

"Hello, world!" is a simple computer program which outputs or displays the message "Hello, world!". It is often the first program written by people learning to code.

Why to learn Python?
  • Python has a simple syntax that makes it suitable for learning programming as a first language
  • It's extremely versatile and powerful: you can use it for both small and complex tasks across different industries
  • It's the fastest growing programming language and it is the most-searched programming language on the internet (source: TIOBE index and PYPL index).
  • It has a supportive online community and Python programmers are usually helpful :)
  • It's in high demand for jobs in the fields of artificial intelligence, data science, web development and app development

Don't worry, Python is friendly! :)

How to get started?
1. Install and Setup

  • You can try Python using this online code editor. You'll need to have Python on your computer to be able to save your programs later on but it's okay to use this for the first time.
  • Mac/Linux users: Python usually comes pre-installed on macOS and most Linux distributions so it's easy to get started. To make sure, open Terminal and type the command python -- version . In the unlikely case of not having Python installed, you can download it for free from here.
  • Windows users: In most cases you'll have to install Python from Microsoft Store (it's free). You can find a detailed guide here, you just have to follow a few simple steps. Once Python is installed, open PowerShell and enter Python --version (it starts with capital P for Windows!)  to make sure it's there.

2. Writing and Editing Code
  • You need a code editor or an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to write and edit source code and computer programs
  • As an absolute beginner, feel free to try Python using the online editor I recommended above
  • You can use any code editor you like. I personally prefer and use Visual Studio Code, you can download it for free here.

3. Write your first Python program! :) If the steps above look too complicated or intimidating, let me know and we'll set everything up together during the first lesson.

My cat also enjoys coding ^⨀ᴥ⨀^
