During the period 1884 -1914, European explorers and missionaries started mapping the interior of Africa at the Berlin conference.
The European colonisers, disclosed that Africa was full of raw materials that could be exploited and used to fuel the industrial revolution. They saw it as a new place to invest their money.
Until then, the largely unexplored African continent was divided into protectorates, colonies and 'free-trade zones' by European colonisers.
The colonisers had little knowledge of local conditions at the time and their primary concern was to prevent competition for African soil among themselves. Since nobody could forecast the short-lived colonial period, the border architecture that survived the colonial era. They called Africa the “Dark Continent” because it was unknown to them.
This got mixed up with the more sinister idea of ‘Darkest Africa’ as a place where the inhabitants were savage, uncivilised, and brutal.
The colonisers, after the industrial revolution, considered industrial towns and technology to be signs of civilisation.
African peoples did not have these, so they were branded uncivilised.
These arrogant attitudes allowed European colonists to ignore the established African tribes and kingdoms with their rich histories and cultures.
By promoting ethnic prejudice and encouraging countries to destabilise their neighbors, the resultant ethnic partitioning has led to perpetual civil wars across the continent from “Cape-to-Cairo”.
Fast-forward, we will also explore the current overall state of affairs across the African continent which was colonised to 54 different countries.
An estimated 1.3 billion people in the entire African continent was directly or indirectly affected by the continent’s colonisation in some form or the other.
In the lesson, we shall look into the tale of lost opportunities and extinguished hopes with their lasting impact
Above all, we shall also look at the success stories and the insights from a dynamic continent that changed the course of colonisation in its track.
