What is the meaning of small talk?

Small talk is casual, light-hearted, conversation to help people built rapport and establish a connection with someone. It is usually about unimportant topics, and it can be used as an ice-breaker.


The Do's and Don't of Small Talk
Do
- Be friendly
- Show interest
- Ask open-ended questions
- Share your own experiences and opinions
- Keep the conversation appropriate
- 20 second / 40 second time

Don't
- Interrupt
- Speak about controversial topics or sensitive topics
- Dominate the conversation
- Be negative
- Ask very personal questions
